Module 9, Leadership

Leadership is necessary.  AKL identifies Leadership as one of our Five Ideals.  Without leadership our chapters would not be able to operate properly.  Leaders are needed to keep the group on task, to be an example for others in the group, and to encourage others to be leaders themselves.

Encourages the heart

Challenging the process means you don't allow "tradition" to halt progress.  Many times chapters will not change their actions simply because they have "always done it" this way or they can it a "tradition".  Recruitment Boot Camp and this initiative will both encourage you to challenge the process.  Don't be afraid to question the chapter over its current practices.

Challenging the process means there is always a better way.  Remember, no matter how successful you are, you can always do better and that is the same for the chapter.  Being complacent is not an option.

Challenging the process means you seek opportunities, not wait for them.  Just like with recruitment you must look for opportunities, sometimes they will come to you, but most of the time they must be found themselves.

Inspiring a shared vision means you set goals together!  Semester goals, yearly goals and long term goals.

Inspiring a shared vision means that "If you 're not growing, you're dying."  There is no happy medium for a chapter to rest at.  There is no maximum number a chapter can reach before Fraternity loses value.

Inspiring a shared vision means that you all have that vision and goals which are the key to recruitment.  Without the vision and the goals you will not know where to begin and when you have succeeded.

Enable others to act means you hand off tasks to those around you.  It will build your confidence in them and their confidence in themselves.

Enable others to act means you utilize everyone's strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

Enable others to act means the leaders of the future must be given experience now.

Enable others to act means a fraternity is for everyone, not just those with titles.

Model the way means you are a role model for younger members.

Model the way means hypocrisy will be the demise of a leader.

Model the way means we walk the talk, or we Do What We Say We Will Do.

Encourage the heart through keeping hope and determination alive to ensure success.

Encourage the heart through involving, inspiring and rewarding those around you.

Encourage the heart by making everyone feel like heroes.

The following is called the 10 Ugly Realities of Leadership

  1. People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered.  Love them anyway.

  2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.  Do good anyway.

  3. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.  Succeed anyway.

  4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.  Do good anyway.

  5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.  Be honest and frank anyway.

  6. The biggest person with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest mind.  Think big anyway.

  7. People favor underdogs but follow only the top dogs.  Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

  8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.  Build anyway.

  9. People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them.  Help them anyway.

  10. Give the world the best you have, and you'll get kicked in the teeth.  Give the world the best you have anyway.
