Module 8, Motivating Your Membership
A perfect recruitment plan is only as strong as the motivation
of the chapter to follow through with it. Recruitment is a chapter
responsibility, not just a responsibility of the recruitment chair. This
module will focus in general on motivating your membership. Part of this program
was developed by the North American Interfraternity Conference and we have
received permission for the use of the video components that are included.
Strategy One - Decision Making
Please watch the following video on Decision Making:
Decision Making
The role of the leader in fostering a motivational atmosphere
within an organization should not be underestimated. The leader can bring
people together to collectively accomplish goals and tasks. Moreover, as
AKL we are not just a business but a brotherhood, and
this factor can be used to facilitate a motivational climate.
-
Supportiveness - Leaders of the chapter need to
encourage, praise, care, give thanks, and exhibit sincerity to members.
Leaders must have and show feelings.
-
Democratic Decision Making - Leaders should express
confidence while exhibiting approachability and modesty. They should
encourage freedom of expression and participation. Remember that "people
support what they help create."
-
Trust, Confidence, and Credibility - Student leaders
should place trust in members implicitly, while accepting the fact that they
themselves must first earn it. This involves delegating responsibility,
encouraging independence, showing confidence in members' ability and being
able to suggest ideas but let the members decide 'how to". Leaders
should be open and flexible, but firm after decisions; take responsibility for
group members; demonstrate consistency; and be prepared for questions and
challenges.
-
Openness and Candor - All members should feel they have
had and can have an influence on the direction of the chapter. Leaders
should inform all members of potential changes/challenges, communicate
standards and rules clearly and consistently, praise and criticize
appropriately, listen and learn from others, be tactful, evaluate, and learn
as a group from both success and failure.
-
Emphasize High Performance - Leaders should delegate
challenging tasks, set specific and clear goals, help members understand how
to do their job, and establish appropriate and consistent levels of
expectations.

Involvement
Involvement by all members is the only true way to experience
success. Members need to feel as if they have ownership in the idea as well as a
responsibility to complete the task. Encouraging the members to be
involved through positive means is crucial in regards to motivation.

Recognition
All members, and especially the millennials appreciate
recognition for their activities/achievements. Recognition may be the
easiest way to motivate members. It can be as simple as handing out weekly
certificates, mentioning a specific brother's efforts at a meeting to a little
more elaborate such as handing out awards and discounting dues. Many times
a simple thank you is enough recognition.

Did you know?
-
AKL distributes at least two
individual undergraduate awards every year. Every spring the National
Headquarters requests nominations by each chapter.
-
At Conclave, chapters are eligible to receive close to a dozen
awards for their hard work over the last two years.
-
Many of our chapters annually win "Fraternity of the Year" or
similar recognition on their respective college campus.
