Module 4, Values Based Actions

Values define the true character of our members and our Fraternity.  Individually our members may have different core values, but many times our total value lists would look similar.  In this module you will identify your individual core values and how they reflect with your membership in Alpha Kappa Lambda.  If you have the opportunity, you may want to ask other members what their values are.  The values of our members and of our organization MUST drive the actions of our Fraternity.  So the first step is to identify those values.

Core Values

Core values are values that we hold above all others both personally and in the Fraternity.  AKL would identify our Five Ideals as our organization's core values.  People acquire values differently and have different reasons for their values.  Many people learn their values from family, friends and religion.

Values Into Action

Whether or not we realize it our values drive a lot of our actions.  They can determine if we attend class regularly, if we follow or break the laws, if we handle our financial obligations on time, if we follow a process or look for a short cut and so on.

For instance, let's say safety is a value of yours.  With safety as a value you may find yourself using your seatbelt when you get into a car.  You will look both ways when you cross the street.  You will follow instructions in dangerous situations or when involved in dangerous activities.  You wouldn't point a loaded gun to your forehead, light your clothes on fire, or jump out off the roof  of a building.

Trashing Our Values

Sometimes actions do not reflect our values.  This can be phrased as "Trashing Our Values."  Sometimes it is hard to admit that we do not follow our values...what we consider right.  It can be as black and white as following the speed limit or following the laws regarding the legal drinking age.  It can be more complicated regarding your religious beliefs, your health and/or your happiness.

Unfortunately there are also times that our values are challenged by the actions of our chapter and its members.  A chapter that trashes its members values and the values of its Fraternity will not succeed for long.  These chapters generally have risk management issues, image issues and ultimately recruitment issues that they either must address or the chapter fails and closes.

The Results of Values Based Action

Imagine if all fraternity men practiced Values Based Actions.  What would the Fraternity Stereotype be?  What would recruitment numbers look like?  Would things be better or worse?

DWYSYWD

There is a simple phrase that tells you and your chapter how to experience the results of Values Based Actions.  Unfortunately it is harder to accomplish then to say.  But if your chapter embraces this phrase and uses it before you act the opportunities and successes can be endless.  Here is the secret (well...not really as many leadership programs use it) phrase:

Do What You Say You Will Do

What does it look like?  It means as one of our Five Ideals is Scholarship, our brothers and the chapter makes every effort to succeed scholastically.  It means brothers pay their dues to the chapter on time which is reflective of our Loyalty Ideal.  It means we are there for our community and for each other, to reflect our Judeo-Christian Principles.  It means taking the lead even when it may mean being unpopular, because true Leadership is willing to weather the storm.

Did you know?

  1. Many Fraternities are not allowed to identify their Ideals, Cardinal Principles or values to the outside world.  Instead they are expected to show them through their actions.

  2. Values Based Recruitment is the most popular and proving to be the most successful recruitment model being taught on college campuses today.
