The AKL Education Foundation
Established in 1984, the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public education foundation which functions apart from the Fraternity.
Its purpose is "to establish a fund for the promotion and encouragement of outstanding leadership, high scholarship and exemplary character among male students of American colleges and universities."
The Fraternity and Foundation
The AKL Education Foundation and Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda are separate, distinct legal entities. The Fraternity is a Missouri Corporation, while the Foundation was incorporated in Indiana in 1984. Each has its own board of directors. A Board of Trustees, elected by voting members, direct the Foundation.
Both organizations are non-profit. The Foundation, however, is qualified by the IRS as a Section 501(c)(3) - educational and charitable. Contributions to the Foundation are deductible under the IRS provisions if the donor itemizes. Contributions to the Fraternity or directly to any chapter are not tax deductible.
Foundation Services:
Chapter Challenge Grants - Educational grants to undergraduate chapters offer support for specific educational programming and leadership development on the local level.
Chapter-Directed Funds - A chapter may choose to establish a restricted gift fund within the Foundation. This fund allows donors to direct a contribution to a specific chapter. Chapter Corporation Boards are granted the authority to decide how these funds are allocated.
National Awards - The Foundation is a co-sponsor of the National Fraternity's Award program.
